Policy Development

Start Smart Tool Kit for Policy Development

Writing policies and procedures for your volunteer program can seem like a difficult and time consuming task. Start Smart is a tool kit developed by Volunteering Australia which shows you how to develop policies and procedures that will be relevant to the specific needs and situation of your organisation and the volunteers who work with you.

It explains the three stages of the policy process, answers some commonly asked questions, and provides a step-by-step guide to get you started.

Volunteering Australia's Model Code of Practice
Volunteering Australia's Model Code of Practice for involving volunteers is a useful document for setting policy parameters.

Volunteering Australia National Standards
During 2001, Volunteering Australia released the National Standards for involving volunteers in Not for Profit Organisations as well as a companion Implementation Guide to the standards. The national standards are a must for all agencies involving volunteers, and are available for purchase from Volunteering Australia. More details and an order form are available on the Volunteering Australia web site

Volunteering New Zealand Codes of Practice
The Volunteering New Zealand web site also lists a number of 'codes of practice' that may be useful in the formation of volunteer policy. Included on their site is a Code of Practice for both volunteers and volunteer involving organisations, as well as guidelines for appropriate volunteer positions.

Volunteer Rights
The Volunteering Australia web site features a list of 'Volunteer Rights' which outlines the rights of volunteers in undertaking voluntary activity within a volunteer involving organisation.
